Tania Yuen-Carvalho is the office manager at Action Rehab. She trained at the University of Hawaiʻi KCC and the University of Phoenix. She does not treat patients. She handles everything that has to happen before treatment can start, which for a lot of people is the harder part.

Because the wall in front of physical therapy is often not the pain. It is the phone call. What does my plan actually cover. Do I need a referral first. What is this going to cost me before I agree to it. Those questions are why good weeks turn into a year of putting it off.

What she sorts out for you

• Checking your benefits and explaining, in plain words, what your plan says
• Billing your insurance and coordinating with your doctor’s office and your insurer so the paperwork moves without you chasing it
• Getting you on the schedule, Monday to Friday, 7am to 6pm

Hawaii allows direct access to physical therapy, so you can often be seen without a referral. Your plan may still have rules of its own, and Tania is the one who checks rather than guesses.

She will not quote you a number she cannot stand behind, and she will tell you plainly what she does not know yet. That is worth more than a comfortable answer that changes later.
